Butterflies in your stomach. Sweaty palms. Tension. Whether it’s a job interview, speaking to a crowd, or watching a spooky movie, nervousness and anxiety are familiar emotions to all of us.
So if you feel on edge before seeing your dentist, don’t worry. Feeling nervous before or during your dental visit is actually quite normal.
But for some of us, we feel like our nervousness goes to the extreme. In some cases, people develop debilitating dental fear and anxiety that drives them to stay away from the dentist, neglecting their oral health in the process.
Dental fear and loathing…
At Dental Care Group, we understand that there are plenty of reasons why people feel nervous when they visit their dentist.
For those who may feel some sort of uneasiness or discomfort, coupled with worry and fear before a dental appointment, you might have what we call dental anxiety.
However, if you have an intense fear of the dentist that just the thought of it causes you great panic, you might have dental phobia.
It’s important to figure out why people develop some sort of fear towards dentistry. These are some of most common causes of dental anxiety and phobia:
- Bad dental experience in the past (especially as a child)
- Embarrassment
- Fear of losing control
- Pain
I’m scared of the dentist… but I think I need treatment!
Whether you have dental anxiety, phobia or just plain nervousness, oral health is still important to your overall physical and mental health. Medical experts have linked gum infections to conditions such as heart disease and diabetes (in what we call the mouth-body connection), so keeping up-to-date with an oral health professional is strongly recommended.
The best thing you can do if you feel nervous when coming to the dentist is simply to talk to us.
When you tell us how you feel, our kind, empathetic, and gentle nature will help put you at ease. We listen without judging and put your health, comfort, and safety first!
Fight the dental phobia
At Dental Care Group, we take your dental anxiety and phobia seriously. And we work with you so you can overcome whatever dental fears you may have.
A light, fun, and clean state-of-the-art dental clinic
We believe in having a caring and gentle place where those who are normally nervous around dentists can feel comfortable.
We realise that people don\’t always enjoy going to the dentist so we want to make sure that they are at ease from the moment they set foot in our clinic.
We have approachable and helpful staff on-board who would love nothing more than to give you a wonderful dental experience using the latest dental advancements around. Our clinic is a fun place to be, and we want you to feel the same way when you visit us!
Our process
The first thing we do for all our patients is thoroughly explain and inform you of all of the issues.
If necessary, we can prescribe relaxation meds for our patients, or use “happy gas” at the appointment. Happy gas is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide that is delivered during the dental procedure. It creates a euphoric state, with added analgesia that is completely safe.
If, however, there are some difficult obstacles that need to be overcome, we can arrange a session or sessions of “sleep dentistry”, where a specialist anaesthetist can induce a very relaxed sleep state. Through sleep dentistry, dentistry can be performed with no memory of the procedures!
Thorough and confidential…
At Dental Care Group, we value your privacy and confidentiality. Before starting any treatment, we like to understand what you are most anxious about before providing you with a range measures that can be very, very effective.
We understand that you might be apprehensive about your upcoming dental procedure, which is why we believe it is very important to communicate honestly before, during and after any treatments or procedures.
